Gaurav Mishra

Gaurav Mishra is the 2008-09 Yahoo! Fellow in International Values, Communications, Technology, and Global Internet at Georgetown University.

The fellowship is supported by the Yahoo! International Values, Communications, Technology, and Global Internet Fellowship Fund, which was established in 2007-08 at the School of Foreign Services (SFS) at Georgetown University with the help of a $1 million gift from Yahoo! Inc.. Every year, the fund supports one fellow attached to the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy (ISD) and two junior fellows from the MSFS graduate program at SFS to do research on how international values apply to the development and use of new communications technologies, especially in BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China).

Gaurav's research will focus on how social media will be used differently by individuals and institutions in BRIC countries as compared to their first world counterparts. Specifically, Gaurav will explore how differences in language, mode of access and social dynamics will impact the shape of the social web in these countries. Using real world case studies and data, Gaurav will argue that perhaps the most powerful application of social media in BRIC countries will be the use of mobile social networks to mobilize civic engagement and social change.

Gaurav, and Junior Yahoo! Fellows Ben Turner and Pavneet Singh, will share their research on the fellowship blog -- How Global Values Shape Communications Technologies. In daily posts on the blog, they will mostly focus on how social media will be used differently in BRIC countries as compared to US/ EU, but also write on the broader theme of how international values apply to the development and use of new communications technologies in BRIC countries. Over the academic year, they will introduce podcasts and guest posts from thinkers and practitioners from the social media and social entrepreneurship fields and invite contributions from the Georgetown community for a crowd-sourced e-book on the topic. Gaurav, Ben and Pavneet urge the Georgetown community to subscribe to the blog in a feed reader or by e-mail and join the conversation on the blog.

Gaurav is serving as the Yahoo! Fellow for 2008-09 on leave from his role as the National Brand Head for Indica at Tata Motors, which is a part of the Tata Group, India's largest business conglomerate. Gaurav is frequently quoted in media as an authority on the emerging social media scene in India. He has contributed chapters to two books on social media and is presently writing a book how to market to consumers who define themselves by their anti-consumerism. Gaurav has an MBA from Indian Institute of Management Bangalore.
