Title: Watch Now: 2025 Weintal Prize for Distinguished Reporting on Foreign Policy and Diplomacy Honoring Declan Walsh
The Institute for the Study of Diplomacy was proud to host the 2025 Edward “Teddy” Weintal Prize Winner for Distinguished Reporting on Foreign Policy and Diplomacy. This year’s event, titled “Middle Powers; Africa Battlegrounds,” honored Declan Walsh, The New York Times Chief Africa Correspondent, whose reporting on the Sudanese civil war earned him and the Times staff the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting, as well as the George Polk Award and the James Foley Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism.
In his address, Walsh highlighted the dire humanitarian consequences of geopolitical competition in Africa. Walsh asserted that renewed interest in Africa stems from widespread recognition that it is the “continent of the future.” Any nation seeking partnership with African countries, he reasoned, must understand these dynamics. The ceremony then turned to a discussion moderated by NBC News Chief Washington and Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell.
Thank you to all who attended and helped celebrate the important work of Mr. Walsh and his colleagues. The conversations sparked during this year’s Weintal Prize underscored the role of courageous reporting and its impact on shaping global understanding. ISD looks forward to continuing these dialogues and supporting journalists who bring critical international stories to light.
