Publications

One of the principal goals in the founding of the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy was to produce publications on the processes of diplomacy that reflect the experience of diplomatic practitioners and the breadth of knowledge of the Georgetown University academic community. Over the years, this guiding principle has taken many forms: books published either by the Institute or leading academic presses; reports and papers based on research conducted by the staff, associates or working groups created by the Institute; and the case study in international affairs program.

Case Studies

The Institute for the Study of Diplomacy library of case studies was established in 1985 as part of the Institute’s mission to advance and expand the understanding and appreciation of the role of diplomacy in advancing national interests. The library offers scholars, instructors and students a link between the theories of international relations and political science and the practice and dynamics of diplomacy through issue-specific cases, many written by practitioners who lived the events they recount.

Working Groups

The New Global Commons Working Group brings together senior practitioners, policymakers, and leading academics, harnessing the experience and collective knowledge of this broad range of experts to discuss and find workable policy solutions and guiding principles to some of the world’s most pressing issues through the end of the decade and beyond.

The Diplomatic Pouch

The Diplomatic Pouch features the Institute’s insights and commentary on global challenges and the evolving demands of diplomatic statecraft. The Institute seeks to highlight the nuances of contemporary diplomatic issues, and to advocate for constructive diplomatic engagement by the United States and other nations. The Diplomatic Pouch also offers insights for university faculty and instructors on how to get the most out of the Institute’s diplomacy case studies library.
