Dr. Joseph Yackley
ISD Diplomatic Fellow
Dr. Joseph Yackley is a career Foreign Service Officer, inspired by the promise of diplomacy to forge peace, promote prosperity, and advance human rights. In addition to teaching courses in applied history and diplomatic statecraft at Georgetown University, Dr. Yackley teaches economic tradecraft and diplomatic writing at the Department of State’s National Foreign Affairs Training Center. His other assignments at State included covering Iraq in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, Iranian affairs out of Istanbul, consular affairs in Ankara, and human rights in Tunis. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Dr. Yackley spent a decade roaming around Europe and the Middle East as a journalist, consultant, and academic. He has held fellowships from the Robert Bosch Foundation, the International Center for Journalists, and the Fulbright Commission. Dr. Yackley earned his Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago and is a co-author of a book on international political economy, titled Risk Rules: How Local Politics Threaten the Global Economy (Agate, 2011).
