Weintal Prize for Diplomatic Reporting

Tom Brokaw, 2013 Weintal Awardee

The oldest of the Institute's annual public affairs activities, the Weintal program awards scholarships to MSFS students, bestows prizes for diplomatic reporting, and provides a forum for an address on international affairs. These activities are funded from an endowment established by the will of Edward Weintal, a Polish diplomat and diplomatic correspondent for Newsweek magazine.

2013 Edward Weintal Prize for Diplomatic Reporting

The Edward Weintal Prize is an annual award presented to one or more journalists for distinguished reporting on foreign policy and diplomacy. The award is open to journalists in both print and broadcast media. On April 15, 2013 the Weintal Prize for Diplomatic Reporting was presented to Tom Brokaw, NBC News Special Correspondent.

Marvin Kalb and Tom Brokaw discussed the changing landscape of journalism and the future of foreign reporting. A transcript is also available.

The award selection committee is chaired by Marvin Kalb, Jim Seevers and Charles Dolgas and includes Deborah Amos, Steve Coll,  E.J. Dionne, Samuel Lewis, Jane Mayer, John Walcott, and Margaret Warner.

Edward Weintal Scholars

The Weintal trust also provides scholarships for graduate students in the Master of Science in Foreign Service program. The intent of the two-year scholarships is to reward U.S. and foreign students with excellent public service records and great potential. The 2014-2015 scholars are Michaella Seaman [class of 2015] and Marcela Valdivia Correa [class of 2016].
