Young Asian Diplomats Program
Beginning in 2019, The Asia Foundation’s Young Asian Diplomats Program has invited eleven to fifteen actively practicing diplomats from Asia and the Pacific Islands to participate in a two-week program of dialogue, exchange, discussion and coursework. The program, titled “Strengthening Emerging Asian Leadership in Global Relations on U.S. foreign and domestic policy,” features leadership training, exposure to key institutions, and an observation study tour.
Each year, the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy partners with The Asia Foundation to host these talented young Asian diplomats for a five-day intensive course of study program on Georgetown’s Washington, D.C. hilltop campus. This is the fifth year that ISD has partnered with The Asia Foundation to implement this program.
Throughout the week, the participants learn from distinguished Georgetown faculty and ISD State Department and military fellows about a host of regional topics, including China’s economic relationships in South and Southeast Asia, U.S. security policy in Southeast Asia, China – U.S. relations, and the implications of U.S. presidential administration changes for the Asia-Pacific. The faculty and fellows also cover functional issues, such as international negotiation; diplomatic written and oral communication; strategic corruption, data and diplomacy, international development, climate, water and food security; and international security.
The participants meet with senior officials from the State Department’s Bureau of South Asian and Central Asian Affairs and the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
