James Seevers

Director of Studies and Training

James P. Seevers is the Director of Studies at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy (ISD). In this role, he spearheads ISD’s executive education initiatives, including the Georgetown Leadership Seminar (GLS) and the Young Asian Diplomats program. He specializes in curriculum design, academic programming, and instructor and participant recruitment. In this capacity,he also co-leads two School of Foreign Service mid-career graduate degrees: the Executive Masters in Diplomacy and International Affairs (EMDIA) in Qatar, and the Washington semester of the Masters in Diplomacy and International Affairs (MDIA) for Indonesian and Asia-Pacific professionals.

Beyond executive and mid-career education, he oversees ISD’s undergraduate diplomatic studies certificate and undergraduate and graduate student research fellowships. An experienced educator, Seevers leads modules on global policy-making and international institutions and has taught courses on U.S. foreign policy, congressional decision-making, international negotiation, and diplomatic and military statecraft.

Before joining Georgetown, Seevers was a career State Department Foreign Service Officer. His diplomatic tenure included serving as a political officer in Indonesia during its democratic transition, participating in U.N.-led efforts to reunify Cyprus, strengthening the U.S.-India strategic partnership, and liaising with the U.S. Congress on issues related to the environment, oceans and science. He holds a bachelor’s in international relations from Tufts University and a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School.
