Why pursue the Graduate Certificate in Global Health Diplomacy?

The Graduate Certificate in Global Health Diplomacy prepares you to work across a wide range of environments—engaging in multilateral, bilateral, formal and informal efforts to advance health and foreign policy. The certificate is designed to work with students from a variety of disciplines, filling knowledge gaps and building the skills you need to operate effectively in the health diplomacy space.

The certificate’s requirements seek to help you integrate and complement your graduate degree while equipping you with a practical set of skills to assess the complexity of issues and actors in global health diplomacy, to synthesize a wide range of information sources, to extrapolate from relevant case studies and broad strategic goals and to devise innovative, yet pragmatic policy implementation steps.

Your program of study is tailored to your specific academic focus and career goals, combining skills-based training with topical coursework that reflects the breadth of the field. The global health diplomacy certificate is offered jointly by the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy and the Science, Technology and International Affairs Program.

Certificate requirements

Working with H-DIP Faculty Director, Rebecca Katz, you will plan a directed, coherent course of study that includes the following components:

Requirements overview

Two foundation courses are required, each with a grade of A- or above:

  • Global Health Security and Diplomacy
  • Epidemiology

Three electives are required, at least one of which must be outside your degree concentration or academic focus. Your selections should cover:

  • One functional course
  • One health-related course
  • One regionally focused course

An internship is required with an organization whose work directly affects or is affected by health diplomacy. This requirement may be waived with appropriate prior or current work experience.

One Institute for the Study of Diplomacy-directed capstone course is required, completed in your final year of graduate study.

A minimum GPA of 3.2 overall and 3.5 in certificate courses is required throughout the program.
