Eligibility
- Graduate students admitted into the School of Foreign Service with a background in journalism related to diplomacy
About the scholarship
The scholarship honors the legacy of Edward “Teddy” Weintal, a distinguished diplomatic correspondent whose decades of reporting helped shape public understanding of international affairs. Established through his bequest to Georgetown University, it supports graduate students who bring a background in journalism and a commitment to the craft of diplomatic reporting.
Each year, one exceptional SFS graduate student is selected to receive up to $45,000 in merit-based scholarship funding, administered by the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy (ISD).
Selection process
Finalists are nominated by SFS graduate programs upon successful admission to the School of Foreign Service. Prospective students are welcome to mention their interest in the Weintal Scholarship in their graduate application. The Institute for the Study of Diplomacy does not accept unsolicited applications.
The recipient is selected by the Director of the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, which administers the scholarship, in consultation with the chair of the Weintal Fund and the SFS Admissions and Scholarship Committee.
Award renewal
Continuation of the award for the second year of study is contingent upon strong academic progress (3.2 GPA or above). The Weintal Scholar is affiliated with ISD and works closely with the institute throughout their studies.
