Fellowship overview

The ISD Fellows in Diplomacy program supports Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (BSFS) and graduate SFS students pursuing independent research on ongoing and emerging diplomatic issues. Selected fellows receive academic credit and either a $3,000 non-service stipend or a merit-based tuition scholarship, depending on the fellowship.

The Institute for the Study of Diplomacy (ISD) pairs students with advisers drawn from ISD senior staff, Georgetown University faculty or Washington-based practitioners. The research project begins in the fall semester and culminates in a 30-page study presented in the spring. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in other ISD activities.

Two BSFS juniors are selected each spring to pursue fellowship work during their senior year. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Undergraduate fellows receive three credits and a $3,000 non-service stipend.

Five graduate SFS students are selected in the spring of their first year to pursue fellowship work during their second year. Graduate fellows receive a non-service stipend or merit-based tuition scholarship and may opt to take the fellowship for three credits.

One graduate fellowship — named in recognition of Allen W. and Allen M. Dulles — is reserved for a student whose project relates to the intelligence community’s work.

The fellowships honor Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker, Ambassador John Humes, Ambassador David Newsom, Ambassador Roy Huffington, and Allen W. and Allen M. Dulles.

How to apply

Before you apply, review the following steps and gather your materials.

Submit the following materials:

  • A current resume
  • A three-page, double-spaced statement with a project title outlining a research problem and your proposed approach

The proposal should address an ongoing or emerging diplomatic issue — feel free to interpret diplomacy broadly. Before you apply, you’re welcome to talk with current student fellows about their projects.

Indicate award preference

In your application, specify whether you are applying for a non-service stipend or a tuition scholarship. If you receive a non-service stipend, you may not hold on-campus employment during the semester of the award.

Submit your application

Please submit your application to diplomacy@georgetown.edu with the subject line: ISD Fellowship Application – (applicant’s surname).

If taking the fellowship for credit, register for INAF-912 (spring). If you are a graduate Certificate in Diplomatic Studies (CDS) candidate, the fellowship project fulfills your capstone requirement.

Questions about the program or your proposal? Contact James Seevers, ISD Director of Studies, at jps67@georgetown.edu.
