Porter Travel Grant

The Horace Porter Travel Grant provides $1,000 to support your research-related travel as a School of Foreign Service (SFS) student. 

Established by Colonel and Mrs. Henry McHarg and Mr. Horace P. Meade to honor the late Horace Porter, U.S. Ambassador to France (1897–1905), the grant supports research on issues of international relations, foreign policy, strategy and diplomacy.

Requirements

  • Travel must be at least 100 miles from Washington, DC
  • Research must relate to an SFS academic requirement

Eligibility and award

The grant is open to all Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (BSFS) juniors and first-year graduate students in the School of Foreign Service. If your travel is directly related to an SFS academic requirement — such as a capstone project — or would substantially benefit your academic development, you may be eligible for a $1,000 award. Please note that the grant does not cover travel or costs associated with internships or similar activities.

How to apply

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. You will be responsible for providing receipts upon your return from travel.
